BEAVERTON, Oregon – The Beaverton Community Band presents its Winter Concert on March 22nd. This year’s theme is “Music From Across The Pacific,” and features a variety of pieces written or influenced by Asian, Australian, and other Pacific cultures and composers.
From Korea to Japan to New Zealand, marches to medleys, the Winter Concert showcases a wide variety of music sure to please all listeners. It includes marches by John Philip Sousa (“Mikado March”) and Alex Lithgow (“Invercargill March”), pieces exhibiting variations on traditional themes from Korea (John Barnes Chance’s “Variations on a Korean Folk Song”) and China (an arrangement of “Fantasy on a Chinese Theme” by Beaverton Community Band alumnus Richard Brown), and arrangements of popular music from “Miss Saigon” and “South Pacific.”
Whether written by composers from Pacific nations or inspired by Pacific cultures, the pieces performed at the Winter Concert all pay homage to the great historic and artistic traditions from those regions which have contributed to the repertoire of American concert bands.
